My research group has been active in the field of venous thromboembolism (VTE) for many years, strenghtenin the evidence-base for primary care physisians. All research projects either enhance the diagnostic strategies or prognostic strategies.
See my publications on VTE in PubMed.
The EVA study is a diagnostic study performed in primary care. In all patients suspected of VTE, additional blood is collected and stored centrally in the biobank of the UMC Utrecht for future analyses and validation of point-of-care D-dimer tests. The study started early 2017 and will be finished early 2018.
The PECAN study is a diagnostic study validating the YEARS criteria in primary care. In addition, also additional blood is samples and stored centrally. The study will start in the beginning of 2018.
Finally, I am one of the initiators of a large international individual patient data meta-analysis on diagnosing pulmonary embolism and DVT in primary care. We are currently in the phase of finalizing the search strategy and protocol for the PE study and will start with analyese late 2017 / early 2018. Investigators for this project include Menno Huisman, Harry Buller, Carl Moons, Phil Wells, Gregoire Le Gal, Marc Righini, Clive Kearon, and Jeffrey Kline, amongst others.
The Vista study is a large randomized controlled trial comparing the use of the Vienna criteria for assessing the probability of recurrent VTE events with usual care in patients with unprovoked VTE. The trial finished recruitment and results are expected in 2018. Additional blood is collected and stored centrally in the UMC Utrecht for future analysis.
